Divorce among older couples

Marital problems aren't restricted to one age group. Many older couples in Pennsylvania and around the country may find themselves questioning whether they want to remain in their marriages. This is true in cases where the couple is in a second or even third marriage, as well as in relationships that have lasted for decades.

Contrary to what many people think, divorce numbers have been on the decline for a while in the U.S. Interestingly, however, there is a difference in numbers when couples are broken out by age group. While divorce among younger people continues to decline, divorce rates among people over 50 has increased.

The reason for the increase isn't entirely clear, but experts have a few ideas. The first is that older people may have more than one marriage behind them, and second and third marriages have a much higher divorce rate than first marriages. Another factor is increased longevity. People in their 50s can expect to live another 20, 30 or even 40 years. Some of them may resent the idea of spending several decades with someone who they no longer love or get along with.

Middle-aged and senior people who are considering the end of a marriage may want to meet with an experienced family law attorney. A divorce lawyer may be able to explain the consequences of a mid-or late life divorce to the client and assist in addressing concerns. Issues such as asset division and spousal support can become more complex as people get closer to retirement age. An attorney may be able to assist in negotiating these matters so that strong emotions are kept at a minimum.
